Hip-Hop Artist and Activist, Common, Comes to Arlington Next Week – Do Not Miss It!

Ever wanted to hear from an accomplished hip-hop artist and activist? Well, here’s your chance! The University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Speakers Series invites the community to An Evening with Common on Tuesday, February 11th!

Common is a hip-hop recording artist, actor, film producer, poet, and activist from Chicago. He’s renowned for his roles in films such as Selma, Barbershop and John Wick 2; his lasting influence on hip-hop culture; and his recurring role in the Showtime series he and Lena Waithe executive produce, The Chi. He starred in several films in 2018, including the animated Warner Bros’ Smallfoot and the critically acclaimed Fox film The Hate U Give. In 2019, he starred in The Informer and The Kitchen.

In 2011, Common launched Think Common Entertainment, his own record label imprint, and has released music under various other labels such as Relativity, Geffen, and GOOD Music, among others. Common was nominated for an Oscar, a Grammy, and an NAACP Image Award for his song “Stand Up For Something,” which he co-wrote with Diane Warren. Throughout his career, he has been nominated 16 times for a Grammy Award, winning three. He won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his work in Selma.

Common is also involved in several causes. In the past, he’s supported PETA and the “Knowing is Beautiful” movement, which supports HIV/AIDS awareness. He is also the founder of the Common Ground Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to empower underprivileged youth to be strong citizens of the world. The foundation includes programs dedicated to leadership development and empowerment, educational development, and creative expression, as well as a book club.

The Maverick Speakers Series provides a forum for today’s brightest minds to examine the ideas, actions, solutions, and people that impact the world around us.
